Port of Messina
Morning – Taormina Exploration
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from the port of Messina to the charming town of Taormina, nestled high on the cliffs overlooking the Ionian Sea. Famous for its stunning views, ancient history, and vibrant culture, Taormina is one of Sicily’s most popular destinations.
Start your exploration at the iconic Ancient Greek Theatre (Teatro Greco). This impressive structure dates back to the 3rd century BC and offers panoramic views of Mount Etna and the sparkling sea. The theatre, once used for gladiator games and theatrical performances, is now a popular venue for concerts and events due to its breathtaking backdrop.
Next, stroll along Corso Umberto, the main pedestrian street that runs through Taormina’s historic center. Lined with boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants, the street is perfect for enjoying the town’s laid-back atmosphere. Along the way, stop by Piazza IX Aprile, a picturesque square offering stunning views of the coastline and Mount Etna. Admire the charming San Giuseppe Church with its beautiful baroque façade, and explore Palazzo Corvaja, a historic palace that now houses a museum dedicated to local culture and traditions.
You’ll also have free time to explore the many gardens and hidden alleys of Taormina, visit the Cathedral of San Nicola, or enjoy a coffee at one of the outdoor cafes before continuing to the next part of your journey.
Afternoon – Wine Tasting at Cantine Bonfiglio (13:00 onwards)
After experiencing the cultural and historical richness of Taormina, you’ll head south to Cantine Bonfiglio, located in the picturesque hills of Giampilieri, just outside Messina. The Bonfiglio Farm, established in 1986 and passed down through generations, combines the best of Sicilian tradition with modern winemaking techniques.
Your wine tasting experience will take place amidst the stunning vineyards of Contrada Greco and Piano Cuturi, set on hilly terrain that offers panoramic views over the Strait of Messina. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by the Bonfiglio family, who will guide you through their organic vineyards. You’ll learn about the unique microclimate and terroir that make this area perfect for cultivating indigenous grape varieties such as Nerello Mascalese, Nocera, and Nero d’Avola.
At the Bonfiglio Winery, built in 2015, you’ll explore their innovative yet traditional approach to winemaking. The tour includes a behind-the-scenes look at their production process, from hand-harvesting the grapes to aging the wine in French oak barrels. As you walk through the estate, you’ll hear about the family’s dedication to organic farming, which has earned them certifications for both their vineyards and wines.
The highlight of the afternoon will be the tasting of their finest wines. You’ll savor the delicate flavors of the “Donne di Famiglia” line, including:
"Beatrice" Faro DOC: A rich, full-bodied red wine made from a blend of Nerello Mascalese, Nocera, Nerello Cappuccio, and Nero d'Avola, named after the owner’s wife and aged in French oak barrels for a unique flavor.
"Eleonora" Rosato: A refreshing and elegant rosé wine, named after the owner’s daughter, made from the same native grapes but offering a lighter, fruitier profile.
You’ll also taste wines from the “Luoghi d’origine” line, such as the:
"Piano Cuturi" Faro DOC, a bold red wine with complex flavors that are enhanced by aging in French oak for 24 months.
"Kalonerò", a unique blend of Nero d'Avola and Nocera, offering a taste of the region’s ancient winemaking traditions.
Throughout the tasting, your hosts will share stories about the history of the family and the vineyard, giving you a deeper understanding of Sicily’s rich winemaking heritage.
After an unforgettable afternoon of Sicilian hospitality and delicious wines, you’ll make your way back to Messina, carrying with you the flavors and memories of this unique Sicilian experience.
